Motorcycle Diary: motorbike in Oaxaca, Mexico
Alvin Starkman MA, LL.B.
My longtime passion for driving the motorcycle she took twenty year hiatus to take up residence in Oaxaca. I ignored the warning and herald. While my story pales in comparison to the epic journey Che Guevara popularized in the movie The Motorcycle Diaries, the story must be told comments and advice for those with such suicidal.
Pro Oaxacans, it is part of an economic necessity part of the climate and permissiveness, with street parking logjams and fed into the crisis and, I dare to express their views, somewhat different attitude towards life and living among you, and to the specific socio-economic level ... fatalistic. What is striking is the lack of helmet riders, and the prevalence of whole families (a record number of families seen in one round is at present times five), who jammed the streets to act on a single motorcycle is often mechanically unfit, including every Member babies bare-headed and dangerous itself (without gloves, leather, jeans, etc.). Helmet law enforcement and compulsory education could help. Educators must remember to teach that the helmet is worn on the head, not just slung over his shoulder. In addition, owners provide services, and as such Chuchos Tortas Y Mas, should monitor their couriers leaving premises to ensure helmets are worn and not carried out.
For my part, I was accused of another mid-life crisis at 55, after recently bought a 150 cc. Honda Bros' off-road motorcycles for use on the street, make up our car and pick-up. Perhaps every above-noted reason applies to me, despite leading the middle class existence.
I sold half of Suzuki 550 1980, when my wife became pregnant. But now, in quasi-retirement and adult family life insurance policies kept current level, I was only minimally fazed when the Canadian consul Frances May, warned that she lost three friends to motorcycle accidents. A friend Pancho was in three accidents in about 2 years. Once he took me on a trip with some friends from his motorcycle through the mountains to the city of Sola de Vega. It was the first time in 15 years that I was on a bicycle. I forgot the basic rule: Never brake in the negotiations back on gravel. I remember regaining consciousness, covered in blood, with severe knee pain in the back room of some pharmacies to teary eyes, Pancho, shook my hand on his shoulder, while shouting "¡pal, pal!"
But acceptance and observance of some simple instructions on horseback, some of which is indeed hard to watch, maybe I'll stay away hospital, and my 20-year-old daughter will never be "benefit" from my being over-insured. My less-impulsive and more level-headed Surprisingly, the woman enjoys riding with me despite serious reservations.
For those unattached and in their 20s and 30 years, I will indicate which of these rules I set for myself you will probably want to break, and how to minimize the negative consequences of this activity:
1) Do not ride at night unless absolutely necessary. Alcohol-related deaths and other procedures to improve the road conditions are less than perfect. Lighting and highway signs are often lacking.
2) If you know that it is likely to weather becomes rough (ie during the rainy season) Consider other means of transport, or at least appropriately dressed, and check tires.
3) Try to under the Highway Code to the extent that you can make out, and when in doubt lean the laws of highway traffic, with which you grew up.
4) Try to resist the temptation weave, as complex as it is. Once you're in your fifties you have probably lost on the neck range-of-motion, so if you have custody, Depending on your peripheral vision, and mirrors.
5) Always wear full-face helmets, appropriate footwear and leather gloves and a jacket to a minimum. It is better to be hot and uncomfortable than requiring jaw surgery and extensive skin grafting. Leather provides The first layer of defense and gives ... cotton, wool and polyester each easily rip, along with your skin.
6) Never permit unhelmeted Passengers ride with you.
7) If you are a tourist and have the option to rent a motorcycle if it is used exclusively for cross-country, or you great driving experience in third world cities and overcrowded conditions, some bike, resist the temptation. Like my father often said: "Do not be stupid." It's not worth the risk.
When you buy that new cycle, and keep it in top condition.
9) Do not buy a small scooter or anything under 125-150 cc. You may have much to extricate themselves from danger caused by other drivers. favorite bike in Oaxaca is a Honda 125, used in accordance with surplus holdings. If you can afford Japanese do, or better, go for it. Many Oaxacan friends warned against, for example, the Chinese models. My off-road Honda 150 was carefully selected, although it is smaller than the ones I was accustomed to riding in my past life. It's off-road model with regard on numerous topes and disrepair of the streets. Engine size is 150, because it is the smallest engine feel comfortable given my wife and me to steep hill to our house is light and has enough power for defensive maneuvers. It's pretty small, so that helps me resist temptation make highway traveling.
10) Think twice before opting for a larger bike that You can use carreteras. There is nothing like an open highway tour, but the risk increases exponentially more The higher the speed of vehicles. However, if he lives in Toronto, I always felt safer driving on the roads than in towns ... more checks on drivers more alert and experienced, and easier to avoid potential hazards. By contrast, in Oaxaca highways, not so good, many, motorists drive under the influence, and vehicle mechanical condition is generally questionable, leading to less control drivers. If you are set on the tour to at least 550 CC. model, the minimum power with which I felt comfortable and safe on the open road with the passenger.
In addition to organized groups, cycling, meeting regularly for the general weekend off-road problems, there is at least one of the traditional motorcycle club in Oaxaca, Los Caballeros Templarios. These riders are the exception to most of what I mentioned. individuals, at least when traveling outside the city, after virtually all the rules I set. group consists mainly traders, traders, restauranteurs, and professionals such as doctors and accountants, the average age is 40 something. Their bikes are stored in excellent condition, are suitably dressed, complete with leather embossed with the club and the driver name and logo, and their territory and participates national conferences, as well as the now frequent local get-regional meetings and excursions for one or several days. camaraderie is strong, warm and welcoming. And so my little Honda 150, I continue to resist the invitation to meet the requirements to start and join is ... to purchase larger wheels, and divorce.
