Crete, Greece - Gem in the Mediterranean

The Greeks will tell you that when the gods created the world, they share all the dry land of every race, at the end there was a pile of rock on the left, and those thrown into the Mediterranean Sea, and it became Greece. Whether the story is true or not, Greece remains rocky country, which probably explains why the Greeks are so good at rock movement about it, but one particular pile of rocks on the island of Crete is a jewel among stones.

From the fertile coastal plains to rugged barren mountains, from mellow stone houses on the sharp concrete modernity, from bustling capital to sleepy hill villages, Crete, the largest of the Greek Islands, an island of contrasts.

Home to more than 500,000 people and several million olive trees, the island remains popular with visitors from northern Europe, other parts of Greece, and indeed, visitors from around the world.

Many visitors never venture beyond the beach, pool, or the nearest tavern, and remain (blissfully?) Do not know how big is the island! Unlike other Greek islands, you can not drive (or in some cases, walking) around the island in one day, but they said that four or five days is sufficient to give time to sample some of the benefits islands' and attractions, and 3 weeks you time to tour full-blown. Driving around the island is an experience in itself, road signs appear in both Greek and Roman characters, but writing has some quirks that makes reading maps completely new perspective. And sometimes tortuous bends on mountain roads could be a challenge to any rally driver. Add the to this the occasional appearance of a goat from out of nowhere, and the odd large truck, which can occur at any time, and you soon find your driving skills a lot better and the rate has fallen in line with the pace of life, experiencing here!

For many people say Crete legend of Theseus and the Minotaur, and many visiting cruise ships stop only for a day to their passengers time to see Knossos and the Minoan palaces and museums in the capital the city of Heraklion. To uncomplicated breed of people thousands of years ago, 'city' of Knossos would indeed seem like a maze! But outside As the city lie the ruins of more interest and greater simplicity, which leads to greater understanding and further insight into the history in ruins.

The island holds many surprises, with spectacular scenery, such as Samaria, the longest in Europe, and traditional hill villages, churches and monasteries, where they remain little changed for many years and if you're as likely to see someone in a traditional Cretan dress riding a donkey as a tourist you are riding a scooter. Even in tourist resorts have taken place around farming and olive trees and potato fields in your apartment building will continue to be an active part of life in Crete. Awakening to the sound of roosters crowing and goats bells may still be a part of life, even when surrounded by concrete and glass.

Throughout the island the remains of occupation from Roman invaders, over the Turks, can still be seen, with aqueducts and architecture still plainly visible. But throughout these invasions the Cretan people have remained relatively unscathed and retain their legitimate pride in their island and their culture. With English spoken widely throughout island to ask a Cretan a question is to invite them to sit with you and with time measured differently here will probably sit for a while! Long calls will naturally require food and drink, and enjoy a coffee or eat There are many art forms as necessary, with a long leisurely often prepares meals from the cafe owner domestic production is accompanied by its own 'village' wine. Larger restaurants tourist resorts is 'international' menu, but came here on a sample of Crete, is not it?

Of course, We have beautiful beaches to choose the right place and you can have almost all the bay for themselves in August, and our crystal clean, turquoise sea is ideal for swimming, diving and other water sports. (I often have a sneaking suspicion, even after so long, that sometimes the dye in water to make it that blue!). Add to this Pony trekking, mountaineering, para-gliding, a round of gold at the 18-hole 'desert' golf course and your stay here can be as active or inactive as you like.

Many potential customer ask me about night life for gay people on Crete. The Greeks, of course, admit that they might have homosexual Greeks had, for much of the time, although this is changing slowly (like everything else in Greece). It's not that they ignore it as a way of life, just seems that no notice it! In the busy tourist resorts little notice, it is likely to account remarkably gay couple, but it should be as the Greeks and to be discreet, but then it covers most places in peaceful villages you can also raise eyebrows or two! We have one bar that is now openly marketing themselves as 'Gay', and we have occupied a nudist beach, which is usually interest, and yes, there are gay Greeks, believe me, I live here!

Having said that, there are excellent bars and clubs is 'mixed population' during the summer months, and if your idea of vacation is a club every night from 10pm to 5am, your days spent recovers, then it's just you, but I always suggest you try to get to Crete to visit one day!

During the summer months transport links with northern Europe are excellent, with many flights each week, comes directly Island. Ferries to the mainland and other islands are frequent and Crete excellent choice for island hopping or a long side trip to the general European tour. Many of my guests will arrive on Crete via Santorini (which can be expensive!) And Mykonos (which I almost only Gay resort it was. Personally, I've been there since late '70s years!), and go back to the ferry in Athens. In the winter, even ferries sail such as supply chain of islands. Flights can be a bit more complicated, because in most cases you will need to come via Athens. Off-season trip to Crete reveals the Cretan Community, as it really is, as there will be few tourists around, and many attractions will be closed. On the other hand, you get to see the island dressed in a cloak of green and olive groves carpeted with wild flowers, particularly in March and November, rather than the bare hills and red soil in the summer, visitors will see. As a result of temperature up Celsius half 40th years and rarely any rain from May to September!

Trying to describe the island of Crete, birthplace Zeus, the seat of the Minoan civilization and home to olive crops, in 1500 words is like trying to ship in a bottle, but much harder, but I hope This short article gave you some ideas and I look forward to seeing you in Crete, the island jewel of the Mediterranean!

Some remarks about me, the author. I was born in England and have traveled extensively in Europe, including Eastern Europe and Russia the 'iron curtain' still existed. In 1981 I moved to Australia where I lived and worked in Perth and Kalgoorlie, until I He was deported because they have no taste! Returning to Brighton, England, I worked in the electrical industry, until I started my own catering business. In 2002, after many happy times on holiday in Crete, I decided the time was right to move here. The goods and chattels packed, and after a long journey across Europe, and three ferry trips later, I arrived in Crete In February 2004, and bought 'Villa Ralf' a few weeks later, opening a gay-oriented Guest House in September 2004. Since then I've had visitors from Australia, USA, New Caledonia (!), France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, and of course in the UK.
