The first patents for scooters go back to 1921. Razor scooter was later developed by Gino Tsai in Shanghai, Taiwan and became an instant hit with the public. It did not take long for the scooter's popularity spread throughout the world.
Even before 1950 there were as many as 110,000 scooters on road only in Italy. It was only a little over 50 years since the Vespa-Douglas Corporation in the United Kingdom sold its first gas scooters. Company Douglas was on the verge of bankruptcy when he first started selling their gas scooters. It was a big hit in 1950 Motorcycle Show and saved the company from possible financial ruin.
From 1950 to 1958 has sold more than 125,000 Vespa of their gas powered scooters in the UK. Why a big success? During this period, European countries do not have much money and not much gas to available to the public. Due to the lack of petrol and gas with high mileage on a scooter gas engine's popularity quickly escalated.
Before long, the Italian models (the Piaggio Vespa and Lambretta from Innocenti) to split into other countries. In France, became so popular French tried to boom in the production of their own. By the early to mid-1950 sale of gas scooters climbed to about 1 million per year in France alone.
Other countries wanted to benefit from the latest obsession and trying to climb on the band wagon. While some were successful others were not. Germany began to produce more touring, but it does not meet the public and smaller, cheaper and more fuel-efficient models from Italy and France did. These smaller models were extremely popular on the European market.
Tourist Scooters Manufacturers in Germany built some very strong and powerful versions and were the first to install electric starters. These larger versions were great for traveling, hiking and even racing, but not as popular as the smaller, cheaper, more efficient models used for traveling shorter distances around town.
Vespa began marketing several very popular gas powered scooters from Piaggio, GS 125cc and 150cc GS. These were improved versions of earlier models for several reasons. Greatest reason is probably because the heavy gear mechanism rods were replaced by smaller and lighter lines.
France Scooters Rousse is trying to one-up the Italian competition by the 175 cc model. They were very nice cars and part of the first water-cooled engines, along with other new features, but because it had a pull-start it could not compete with newer models from Italy to were already offering versions with electric starts.
As these wonderful vehicles have evolved over the years have increasingly popular throughout the world. Today they are everywhere. They are cheap to buy, economical operation, and are very practical and functional. These are not toys are indeed a lot of fun to ride. There are electric, gas powered, foldable, mobility and utility scooters.
Electric types are often used by children and youth, but also popular with the elderly and disabled. Models for Disabled people are usually called mobility scooters.
