Parkinson's disease breaks down the communication of nerve endings of the brain that control movement. There is more technical description, but it is the essence it. Untreated Parkinson's can be as total paralysis. Even with Parkinson's care, the patient may have symptoms such as freeze in place, or are unable to swallow or speak. Not every patient with Parkinson's has the same symptoms. We were support groups Parkinson's, where each participant had nothing, some, or few external signs of this disease. My husband was often wheelchair patient.
My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1998. In the early years very few visible symptoms. Now, as the disease progresses, its symptoms are moderate to severe, changing from day to day.
At the end of 2006 developed problems with swallowing. He could not swallow water or applesauce, and therefore could not swallow his pills. He could not swallow pills that will allow swallow. Was continued downward spiral. I started looking for the cemetery plots.
He ended up in hospital for 5 days on intravenous rehydration fluids to him. Once stabilized, they sent him home with the probe installed because he still could not swallow food and water. His pills were administered through the probe for several days. Finally, some of his muscle control returned and he was able to take his pills again. Soon he was able to swallow liquids and up to 2 weeks was eating solid food again. His tube was removed eight weeks later.
After that began with his Parkinson's treatment seriously, took drugs with some delay. He was able to bypass much better to walk, but is able to help when moving alone. He had a bad opinion about the disease from the beginning. Depression made him miserable. Finally, I spoke with my doctor his depression and low doses of anti-depression were prescribed. My husband hates pills. I had plenty of time, it's hard to get him to take other medications, as I would him to this new, another pill?
Fortunately or not, depending on the program for the day husband stayed in bed longer in the AM. I started giving him first medication about 6 hours to get out of bed so that when he slept, he would not have missed his first dose of medication. With this system in place, I was able to "hide" the new pill with others and never found. Yet know. If he knew what it was that did not take. Made a wonderful difference. He lives at the idea of each other that much pleasant, and he is more tolerant of others using the pill for the rest of the day. He still gets depressed when mobility of any kind, it is almost impossible to understand it and we through it.
Recently created a new phrase, "I have to carry their own coffins, used when he receives assistance is expected to (and needs), but I am physically able offer him. Must participate in the transfer from bed to wheelchair, from wheelchair to the toilet, or glide up the stairs or to step out the door get on his scooter. He weighs about 145 kg. and I'm strong enough to lift him. Without his involvement with the dead weight. In such moments I agree with him, "Yes, you have your own coffin, because you are too heavy for me to do it." Power comes from somewhere, and we moved.
Recently had a very difficult moving anywhere. Currently difficult avoid moves and a new arrangement of furniture adapted to their new wave stiffness. His lack of flexibility must be compensated with a flexible environment.
