Family among the families: the Amalfi Coast Entertainment

Campania region of Italy is perhaps most well known for Costiera Amalfitana [Amalfi Coast] for its spectacular views, at Pompeii and other archaeological monuments, and for the city of Napoli, which is characterized by that cultural differences. More often than not, tourists flock to the Amalfi Coast for its romantic views and winding coastal hotels reputation route and around the fog-silhouetted hills and terraced lemon tree crops. It is not often referred to as a family destination. Ironically, however, this area Italy is truly one whose success is rotating on the strength of the family who live there. Willingness to share the local family Spirit is what our trip from here with our two young sons, one of the memorable trips we have taken the Italian.

We went the Amalfi Coast at the very top of the off-season, late March, and so missed the birth of spring, many incredible flora and vegetation in the region. But we also by-passed the intense crowds and traffic, which bloom with flowers start immediately after Easter. This fortuitous timing also coincided with the "settimana Santa," Holy Week before Easter. We have experienced great way of "giovedi santo" [Maundy Thursday], including "Lavanda dei Pied '[feet washing] symbolic day," Prossessione SS.Sacramento alla del della Cappella reposizione per l'adorazione. "It is astonishing and haunting procession to remember the betrayal of Christ. At night, we watched the townspeople, when walked for hours up and over the hill in Ravello for men dressed in white robes and hoods dissident wailing vocals that trade sign of mourning crooked path of Christ.

We chose as our base, Ravello, a village in the hills above the Amalfi drive, which we found be less hectic than the coastal towns of Amalfi and Positano, and one additional access to other destinations such as Pompeii and Naples. We arrived at night about an hour apperitivo, and so decided to take in the atmosphere of the central square with the back-drop Ravello's church, La Chiesa d'Annunziata. There, the signs warning "No ball-playing, no biking, roller skating and no-no scootering" We were sitting outside the local bar and watched our children to join ten years-old resident, Enrico and others, playing ball, bike-riding, roller skating and scootering,. How do kids know each other, we started talking with the owner of the bar, Uncle Enrico, Luigi Schiavo.

"It's such a beautiful, quiet, "I said to him, he brought us a glass of Pinot Grigio," All the kids seem to get along so well. "We are almost all related," he said, "See that store over there? One who sells ceramics. It's my cousin. Travel agents around the corner ... It is her husband. Then there's Vincenzo ... "

In a one-hour period, an explanation their extended family, like another glass of Pinot Grigio, followed. Mario Capuano, Luigi's cousin, own "Wagner Tours." Specializes in planning weddings on the Amalfi coast, but also organizes just about any other kind of tour you can imagine. "We try to cover every detail, "says Mario. We know the importance of family, and believe me, is the first step is a happy, stress-free wedding day ... "Mario is a wife Paolina Amatruda. She is someone who owns a pottery shop next to the bar. 25 years of business offers traditional ceramics from the nearby Vietri feature refined beauty and quality. "We always try to recover themselves," said Paolini, "to adapt, but without losing traditional quality, which has sustained us all these years. Our kids keep us young and our family memories will help us to keep true to our tradition of "family talent does not end with Mario and his wife. Amatruda Vincenzo, Mario's brother-in-law, teaches cooking classes in his private house, situated on a cliff top, 350 meters above sea level. After many years as a chef and owner of a restaurant in Ravello, "Vincenzino" [abbreviation for "Vincent"] developed a cooking school, where he says that people can cook and eat "to heart and not just in the mouth." Firstly, Vincenzino takes his students to some of the small grocery stores located in the historic streets of Ravello. Speak Italian and English, he introduces his students to shop owners and an explanation of how the locals choose their wine and vegetables as follows. Together choose menu, depending on season and taste all gathered. Finally, they continue with hands-on training of food and wine from apperitivo, elegantly past "il primo" course and "il secondo" and finally for dessert and espresso. If the weather cooperates, as it so often does in Ravello, Vincenzino students will eat on the terrace so that their culinary experiences to be strengthened spectacular views the Mediterranean Sea.

The whole family can experience like about venturing no further than the warm Capuano extended family, but one can hardly come to this region of Italy, without joy in Amalfi drive. The first step in this process, if you have the courage and taste, [and Children old enough to sit behind him without squirming] is rent a motor scooter.

When you rent a scooter in the picturesque Positano, you only hire scooter? Maybe. But if you're a "fa quattro chiacchiere" [do a little chat] You also realize that you are renting Pepe Mandara from Positano to rent a scooter, [Viale Pasitea 99, Tel. 089 812 2077], cousin Giulio, Anna, Rosa and Rafaelle Mandara, who own Pizzeria across the street, Valle dei Mulini, [Via Vecchia 5, Tel. 089 875 232]. Or maybe you might meet their relatives in other Boutique Luisa next door, including Susanna Mandara, designer, Luisa and Gaetano Mandara, owner and Susanna's mother and father, Giovanni Mandara, Susanna seamstress and nurse in charge of production Susanna designs. "In Positano, it is very common for the whole family to hand in a successful business," Susanna me said that "We do what we can to help each other. My success is their success in some small way their success is mine as well. "No discussion of the family here in Positano would be complete without significant family involvement Sersale, owners of La Sirenuse [+39 089 875066], the most important hotel in Positano. Family owned Sersale summer residence in Positano, 18 century palazzo in the heart of the city, where he often spent summer vacations, but during the Second World War they retreated there full time to escape the bombing of its hometown, Naples. In 1951, the family decided to turn their vacation home in a small elegant hotel. They started with eight rooms and a large terrace with a view the siren islands. Fifty years later the hotel has 62 rooms with all modern conveniences in a five-star luxury hotel. But staying at the La Sirenuse still feel they are at home. To this day, families Sersale Le Sirenuse and their family members are working together to keep its position as a world-class hotel. Four descendants of the original owner, Antonio Sersale, was responsible for the initial opening hotel. For years, the oldest brother, Aldo, managed hotel with the help of the mayor of Positano, Paolo Sersale, Aldo's brother. Together, these two brothers ran up hotel by Paolo's death in 1991. Aldo, also ill at the time resigned, and their younger brother, Franco, Franco began to take action to make improvements now attributed to the current luxury hotel status. His taste in furniture, paintings and sculptures have a vehicle for expression as a Franco-liberal purchases antiques, architecture, beautifully offset hotel and bring joy to the guests. His son, Antonio, now runs the hotel like Franco, aged 77, he describes himself as "semi-retired." "He's retired, but it's still our" center. " We know that we can go to him on important decisions concerning the direction we want to take the hotel. We always kind of response that allows us to hold fast to our family roots, while also creating a vision for our future that will keep up with the pace our guests to evolving needs and tastes. "As for our 'semi-tired' families, I'm back in the bar sipping a glass of Chianti, this time watching kids play ball for a "no-ball plays" sign with his new-found friends. We continued in our journey with a visit to Amalfi, Capri, Pompeii and Napoli ... but that's another story for more ...
